Adopting A Relative

If the country you are adopting a relative from requires a homestudy, Sunrise will complete this for you.

If the country is a Hague country, Sunrise will also help you with the complex requirements of the Hague Convention

A homestudy is required for:

  • all relative (and non-relative) adoptions completed outside of British Columbia (even is the adopting parents already have the adoption order from the country of origin)
  • all Hague country adoptions, whether the child is related to the adopting parents or not

A homestudy is not required for

  • adoption of a relative child who lives in Canada
  • adoption of a relative child from a non-Hague country, where the adoption is to be completed in British Columbia. In these cases, we will prepare a report to be submitted to the British Columbia Supreme Court
  • adoption of a relative child from another country, if the child is an orphan (i.e. both parents are dead)
