Historically China has been the most popular adoption program in every country which China permits its children to be adopted to. Over the past few years however, the waiting time for a proposal has become so long that few adopting parents apply to China now. The exception to this is parents who qualify to be expedited by China. You may be expedited if you or one of your parents were born in China, Hong Kong or Taiwan. Our experienced and professional staff in Canada and in China will guide you through the process. You work with one agency - Sunrise Adoption - avoiding duplication of paperwork and costs. Both before and after the adoption, Sunrise China parents get together to offer each other support and and to share adoption stories and experiences.
The Children of China
- Generally live in orphanages
- Are usually girls
- Are usually between the ages of 10 months and 2 years
The Parents
- Must be between 30 and 50 (maximum is 55 if adopting through the special needs program)
- Must be married a minimum of 2 years
- If previously divorced, must be married 5 years (may not be twice-divorced)
- Must be physically healthy, able-bodied and free of mental health issues
- Must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) les than 40
- Must have a minimum family income of US$10,000 per member of the household, including the adopted child)
- Must have net assets of at least US$80,000
- Must have a minimum high school education
- Must have no more than 5 children in the home, including the child to be adopted
- Must have no children under 1 year of age
- Must be free of criminal records
Approximate Waiting Period
The time to complete an adoption from China continues to increase. It is now taking in excess of 40 months after log-in date to receive a proposal. We anticipate that this wait will get longer although no one knows by how much.

Adopting parents from Sunrise usually travel to China in groups, although that is not necessary. The stay in China is approximately 2 weeks - the first in the region you are adopting from and the second in Beijing, completing the immigration process.
