Most of Central and South America is effectively closed to adoptions by Canadians. There are some exceptions. These countries are not easy to adopt from, and the waiting time is generally in excess of two years. Our Central and South America Program Manager keeps track of the opportunities as they arise. These include Colombia, Panama, and Brazil.
The process of adopting from Haiti has become unstable and unpredictable. As a result, Sunrise is not accepting applications from Haiti at this time. We expect to have a program to find parents for Haiti's orphans after the proposed new Haitian adoption laws have been passed. This will probably be some time in 2009.
