Sunrise staff has made annual trips to Africa over the past three years in order to explore possibilities of establishing adoption programs, to meet with government officials and to visit orphanages. It is a powerful experience, to say the least. While adoption has been a foreign concept in Africa in the past, some countries are looking to international adoption in order to assist with their overwhelming number of orphans. One in five children in Africa today is an orphan, and the problem is getting worse. International and transracial adoption is a new concept to most countries in Africa. We are trying to proceed cautiously.
So far, we have established an adoption program with Kenya. However, the most common country to adopt from is Ethiopia (it is the fastest growing adoption program in the history of international adoptions).
We have also established a project to assist children and families affected by AIDS and to help keep families together (for information read Cluster Project).
