A Birthmother's Story

My name is Valerie. In September 2006, I gave up a baby boy for adoption. This is my story.

In December 2005, I became pregnant. It wasn't until I was 17 weeks that I finally went to a doctor. At first I did try to go for an abortion, but it was too late for that. My doctor then told me about Sunrise Adoption.

I looked at their website and read some of the stories like mine. I liked what I read so I emailed them and someone contacted me. We set up an appointment to meet face to face so we could talk about my options and what giving my baby up for adoption would mean if that's what I decided.

Sunrise showed me a very thick book, full of people who wanted to adopt a baby boy or girl really badly. With help from my social worker and counsellor, I was able to choose a very loving couple to adopt my baby.

I do not regret giving my baby up. With the help of Sunrise, I got to meet the couple before I went into labour and I knew as soon as I had met them that they where the couple to be mommy and daddy for my baby. The adoptive mother and father were there for the birth of their baby, which is what I wanted - they got to hold him right away. I decided not to see my baby until that first month was over with - I felt I needed some time. I did name my baby though.

Sunrise has the nicest people I have ever met in my life. I could never thank them enough for making this very easy and helping me make the right choice for my baby.

I have since met my baby and visited the family in their home. I hope to see him soon again. I know he is in the best of hands. I couldn't ask for anyone better to raise my baby as their own.
