Bulgaria

The Children

  • May be girls or boys.

  • Children may be adopted when they are over one year of age. The average age of children is 2 to 4 years old. Children with the greatest need of international adoption are older than 3 years of age and children with known additional needs.

  • Live in orphanages but sometimes moved into foster care.

  • The children typically belong to minority groups – usually Turkish or Romanian.

The Parents

  • Adoptive parents should be between the ages of 25-55 years old. The maximum age approval will be 55 years older (singles age 50) than the child.

  • Married couples and single women may adopt from Bulgaria.  There is no length of marriage requirement;

  • Applicants should have at least an average income;

  • Must be in good mental and physical health with no known conditions that would impact their ability to adequately parent the child.

  • Not currently using cannabis.

The time frame to receive a proposal is approximately five years.  The process may be expedited if a family is open to an older child or a child with special needs. Bulgaria is a member of the Hague Adoption Convention, has a solid process and information is typically provided about the child.
