China Adoptions

Sunrise is continuing to assist families to adopt special needs children from China.  Sunrise works directly with the central authority in China (CCAA) and therefore does not require our families to work with an intermediary agency.

China's Waiting Children

China’s Waiting Children represents a wide range of special needs which may be minor and correctable or may be more complex. The following is a list of the most common special needs conditions seen in children for adoption, although there can also be a range of other medical conditions:

  • Cleft lip / palate

  • Congenital heart disease

  • Hepatitis B+

  • Limb abnormalities

To qualify to adopt a child with special needs, you need to be approved in the homestudy process for the specific special needs you are open to.  You must demonstrate the ability to support the child both financially and emotionally as well as physically.

We encourage you to thoroughly research the special need(s) you feel you could support within your family. It is important that you think about the range of needs of the child and be realistic about the needs your family can handle.

Each family applying to adopt a Waiting Child from China will be expected to complete additional paperwork and explore the resources available to them in their community as it pertains to the special need(s) of the child they are proposing to adopt. If the appropriate resources are not accessible within your region, it can affect your ability to qualify for a Waiting Child.

The majority of children are between 12 months to 4 years of age at the time of referral.

China Heritage Adoption

If at least one of the adopting parents is of full Chinese heritage and they, or both their parents, were born in Mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan you are eligible to apply to the China Heritage Program.  The children who have been proposed through this program do not have identified special needs.  The wait times of the Heritage program has extended to more than 7 years.

Non-heritage Applicants

Over the past years, the waiting period from dossier to proposal for non-heritage applicants has lengthened to an estimated 9 plus years.  As a result, we are no longer accepting applications for adoption from China unless you wish to adopt a child with special needs or are eligible for the China Heritage Program.

Relative Adoptions

Sunrise also facilitates relative adoptions (the adoption of a child related to you) from China.
