Sunrise is now accredited by the National Authority for the Protection of the Child’s Rights (NAPCRA) to complete intercountry adoptions in Romania. Romania is a party to the Hague Adoption Convention; as a result there are very specific rules governing adoption.


The Parents

  • At least one of the applicants must be a Romanian citizen

  • The couple must be married (must be opposite sex).

  • Single applicants can apply. 

  • There is no age limit however the applicants must be at least 18 years older than the adopted child.

  • The applicants must live in Romania for at least 30 days, in order to tie a relationship with the child they are adopting.

  • Applicants should have financial security.

  • Must be in good mental and physical health with no known life threatening medical conditions or suffer from any psychological conditions.

  • No criminal record or prior involvement with child protection services.

The Children

  • Children available for intercountry adoption must have been available for at least 2 years domestically and whose domestic adoption was not possible.

  • Therefore children are at least 3 years old

  • Children must be under 18 years old to be adopted and children over 10 years must consent to their adoption.

Relative Adoptions 

Sunrise facilitates relative adoptions (the adoption of a child related to you) from Romania. The adoptive parent must be related within the fourth degree of kinship to the child and at least one of the adoptive parents must be a Romanian citizen.
