Bulgaria is a signatory to The Hague Adoption Convention.
We are currently accepting applications of residents of all provinces except Ontario and Quebec. Bulgaria adoptions is particularly an option for adoptive parents who are willing and able to wait for a longer period of time before adopting.
The Parents
The eligibility criteria to adopt from Bulgaria are:
An adoptive parent must be 20 years older than the child.
Adoptive parents should be between the ages of 25-55 years old. There is a maximum age difference of 50 years between the child and the younger adoptive parent.
A couple must be legally married. There is no length of marriage requirement.
Single female applicants are eligible.
Unfortunately, same sex applicants are not permitted to adopt at this time.
Applicants should have at least an average income.
Must be in good mental and physical health with no known conditions that would impact their ability to adequately parent the child.
Not currently using cannabis.
The Children
Children available for international adoption are generally over 2 years of age, with the average adopted child being between 3 - 4 years old.
There is a strong need for families who are open to adopting older children, age 4 and above, as well as children with identified special needs.
Sibling groups may also be available for adoption.
Children initially reside in orphanages and, in some cases, may later be placed with foster families.
Children typically come from minority communities, including Turkish or Roma background.
Wait Time and Travel
The expected time frame to receive a child referral is approximately five years. Families should anticipate making two trips to Bulgaria as part of the adoption process.
