VIETNAM ADOPTIONS
Vietnam is a signatory to The Hague Adoption Convention.
The Vietnam Hague Central Authority has accredited Sunrise to assist with finding families for children.
We are currently accepting applications of residents of all provinces except Ontario and Quebec.
The Parents
The eligibility criteria to adopt from Vietnam are:
An adoptive parent must be 20 years older than the child.
While Vietnam does not have an age limit, they will consider the child's age in contrast to the adoptive parents age and encourage a gap no greater than 45 years between child and parent. For example, if you are 48 years old, Vietnam will looks at matching you with a child no younger than 3 years of age.
A couple must be legally married.
Single applicants are permitted.
Unfortunately, same gender couples are not permitted to adopt from Vietnam at this time.
There is not limit to the number of children already in the home.
Must be physically healthy, able-bodied and free of mental health issues. Applicants must not be taking any prescribed medication for mental health issues.
Not using cannabis.
The Children
The children available for adoption reside in orphanages and are usually over 24 months old at the time of the proposal.
Most of the children are left at orphanages shortly after birth with no identifying information about their birth family; some are placed for adoption by their birth families.
Reasons for adoption include poverty, limited social services and government support for single parents, lack of family support, and birth parents who feel they are not in a position to parent. Adoptive parents cannot select the gender of the child they wish to adopt.
Children have medical tests done before they are proposed for adoption. These tests include a standard panel of blood tests as well as tests for Hepatitis and HIV infection.
Children are well cared for in orphanages however, the ratio of caregivers to children is high.
It is common that there is no background information known about the child’s birth parents or pre-natal risk factors.
Relative Adoptions
If you are a Vietnamese citizen with Permanent Resident Status in Canada or a Vietnamese/Canadian citizen wishing to adopt a relative child in Vietnam then we can assist.
